The Sunnyside Tennis Club hosted its annual Sunshine Days Tennis Tournament this past weekend at the Sunnyside High School tennis courts.
A total of 45 participants from Ellensburg to Kennewick took part in the tournament. The money raised from entry fees will help supplement the Sunnyside Tennis Club's youth tennis program.
In the boys 18&U finals, Marco Diaz of Grandview defeated Tyler Thompson of Sunnyside in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.
Diaz reached the semifinals after a bye. In the semis, Diaz defeated Mitchell Sanchez of Sunnyside in three sets, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4. Thompson reached the finals by defeating Jun Jun Benedicto, 7-5, 6-4.
Jacob Kresse of Outlook won the boys consolation finals when Adam Strom of Wapato failed to show.
Kresse reached the consolation finals by defeating Grandview's Raymond Cantu of Grandview, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4.
In men's singles play, Torrey Brantner of Yakima defeated Steve Diaz of Grandview, 6-3, 6-2 in the title match.
Brantner earned a trip to the finals after defeating a game Allen Gapuz of Sunnyside, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Diaz made his way to the finals with a straight sets victory (6-4, 6-2) over Kyle Heisey of Granger.
In the men's singles consolation finals, Bill Higgins of Yakima defeated Benedicto, who didn't show for the match.
Higgins grabbed top consolation honors after defeating Jonathon Schilperoort of Toppenish in the consolation quarterfinals, 7-5, 7-6.
J. Brantner and T. Brantner won the men's open doubles title following a straight sets victory over Diaz and Gapuz, 6-4, 6-1.
The Brantners went to the finals following a semifinals victory over C. Diaz and M. Diaz in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Diaz and Gapuz defeated L. Geangan and J. Ambil 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinals.
B. Higgins and A. Yaderrino won the consolation finals with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Lou Gannon and Coke Smith.
Higgins and Yaderrino gained a trip to the consolation finals following a 6-2, 6-1 victory over J. Kresse and H. Van de Graaf in the consolation quarters. Gannon and Smith defeated D. Boswell and J. Mercer, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in the consolation quarters.
In women's play, Betsy Dunbar of Zillah claimed the individual title with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Jerika Martinez of Sunnyside.
Dunbar defeated Erika Mendez 7-5, 7-5 in the semifinals while Martinez beat Dolores Gomez 6-3, 6-1.
Mendez won the consolation finals with a 1-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Kendra Golob of Granger.
In boys 14&U play, Aaron Porter of Ellensburg won the individual title with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Matthew Friehauf of Kennewick.
Porter defeated Matthew Johnson of Sunnyside 6-4, 6-2 in the semfinals. Friehauf went to the finals following a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Rogelio Ruiz of Wapato.
Johnson won the consolation finals with a victory over fellow Sunnyside resident Joey Zijlstra, 6-0, 6-4.
Kiana Ramos won a round robin tournament to take the individual girls 15&U title. Ramos defeated Jamie Zijlstra of Sunnyside, 6-1, 6-0.
J. Martinez and E. Mendez were the winners of the mixed doubles crown with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over B. Dunbar and A. Dahlin.
