Sunnyside police have apprehended a 41-year-old man, believed to be involved in the Tuesday night, Sept. 20, mugging of a 71-year-old Sunnyside woman.
Local law enforcement officers arrested the suspect yesterday afternoon at a residence in the 700 block of South 16th Street. Initial charges include robbery in the first degree and possession of stolen property in the first degree.
The robbery occurred outside a Sunnyside church on South 16th Street at about 9:45 p.m. on Sept. 20. The victim, who was leaving the church, was knocked to the ground by an unknown assailant, sustaining minor injuries in the process. The thief snatched the 71-year-old woman's purse before fleeing the scene.
Sunnyside police arrested two women in connection with the case, after they attempted to use one of the credit cards in the stolen purse at a local store the morning after the robbery.
Sunnyside detectives said they were able to obtain video tape evidence and several good leads, which led to the arrest of the robbery suspect yesterday. Detectives also report the investigation is continuing and more arrests are expected.
