RICHLAND - In a back and forth game where both teams were attacking relentlessly, the Hanford Falcons held off the Sunnyside Grizzlies to win 2-1.
The Falcons scored first in the 20th minute of the first half. On a counter attack, a Hanford player took a shot which hit the post and bounced away. Another Hanford player grabbed the rebound and kicked the ball into the net to make it 1-0, Hanford.
Five minutes later, Sunnyside's Freddie Sanchez evened things up when he received a pass from Alex Aguilar and converted the pass into a score.
In the second half, Hanford scored the go ahead goal in the 25th minute. "Our sweeper was trying to control the ball by dribbling and he got it stolen from him," SHS Coach Juan Pineda said.
After the ball was stolen the forward moved quickly up the field and put the ball in the net. Hanford was up 2-1 and that's how the game would end.
"Even though we lost it doesn't feel like a loss," Pineda said. "We grew a lot in this game. Hanford is the toughest team we've faced this year and probably the best team in our league.
"We had a lot of good things happen considering they're a really good team and they pressure you constantly," he added.
"This gives us the confidence to play anyone in our league," Pineda said.
The Grizzlies (1-3, 4-3) will host Wapato this Tuesday, April 4, at 6 p.m.
