Pre-schoolers receive bicycle safety training

Thanks to a grant from Legends Casino, some Sunnyside daycare kids received some bike training last Friday.

Sponsored by Sunnyside's Promise and with the help of the Sunnyside Police Department and their Explorer post, a bike safety training program was offered to the kids at Learning Land Express Preschool and Daycare.

"I think it's great," said owner Mary Gamboa. "The kids get to be out in the sun. It's a beautiful day for it all."

Lisa Fairbairn, director of Sunnyside's Promise, said about 60 kids participated in the program.

"We're wanting our kids to know they must wear helmets and respect cars," she said. "All the kids today received a free bike helmet."

The children were taught the proper hand signals. "So when their out riding bikes they'll be safer," Fairbairn said.

After the children were taught the left, right and stop hand signals, they went through a course set up and practiced their new skills.

Fairbairn said this training is all a prelude to the Spring Fling bike ride scheduled for April 22.
