SHS netters sweep Prosser

PROSSER - The third time was a charm this past Friday for the Sunnyside girls third doubles team of Gayle Hansen and Addy Hernandez.

On two previous occasions the girls played the match that decided whether their team won or lost. Both times the girls lost three-set heartbreakers and the Lady Grizzlies lost 3-2.

Hansen and Hernandez reversed the trend at Prosser Friday, recording a 6-4, 6-2 win over the Mustangs' Stephanie Lyon and Jamie Hopwood to secure a 3-2 win for the girls and a sweep, as the boys won by a margin of 5-0.

"They've really improved," Coach Troy Whittle observed of Hansen/Hernandez.

Also in girls play, Sunnyside's Jerika Martinez won 6-1, 6-1 over Prosser's Dianna Smith and Sunnyside's Jessica Gudino won 7-5, 6-1 over Susan Wilson for a sweep of singles play.

The Lady Grizzlies lost the first two doubles matches-setting up the Hansen/Hernandez heroics- as Helen Shuttleworth/Regina Mendes lost 7-5, 6-2 to Prosser's Lauren Fiedler/Sophie Benson and Sunnyside's Capri Miles/Hannah Paulakis lost 6-2, 6-4 to the Mustangs' Alicia Young/Kaley Adams.

"I'm pleased with the girls' play," said Whittle. "This is the year we were supposed to rebuild (after losing six of eight varsity players) but we're not that far away from being 3-1."

Whittle was also pleased with the boys win in the MVL match with Prosser, which had originally been scheduled for this past Saturday.

Leading the 5-0 victory was Danny Plesha, who again pitched a shutout with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash over Prosser's Trevor Fox.

Sunnyside's Tyler Thompson followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Kellen Crawford.

In doubles play, Jake Wavrin and Hunter van de Graaf cruised 6-2, 6-2 over Prosser's Homer Gongoria and Jake Cove.

Sunnyside's Mitchell Sanchez and Jesus Alquicira were equally convincing in their 6-2, 6-1 victory over C.J. Fulton and Matt Taylor.

Boys play wrapped up with Jacob Kresse and Justin Snyder prevailing 6-1, 6-1 over Prosser's John Surmeyer and Colton Zacher.

The sweep advanced the Sunnyside boys to 3-1 overall on the season and the Lady Grizzlies to 2-2.

The Sunnyside tennis teams will next be in action next Tuesday, April 11, at West Valley. The match was originally scheduled to be at Sunnyside, but the Grizzlies will get West Valley at home on May 8, the regular season finale.
