Drilling starts on Mabton's well #5

Justin Eggland (L) hammers the drill to knock the dirt out of it as Gary Howell holds the drill steady. The two Blue Star Enterprises employees plan on drilling 700 feet.

MABTON - Drilling started on Mabton's well #5 Monday at the corner of 6th and South streets.

"We're really, really excited," Mabton Mayor Velva Herrera said. "I think we've been waiting for this for about a year and a half."

The two wells operating now in Mabton couldn't keep up with the demand for water. "This new well will help us keep up with the demand for water," city employee Tootie DelaFuente said.

The new well will bring the number of wells to four in Mabton.

Blue Star Enterprises of Richland is doing the drilling and the project is being overseen by Spink Engineering.

The contract calls for the well to be completed in 80 days but Blue Star is expected to be done before that, according to Alan Rainey, an engineer with Spink Engineering.

Blue Star is expected to drill about 700 feet down. "We're drilling it the same as well #4," Rainey said. "The production has just gone down so we're using #5 to supplement #4 from the same aquifer."

The new well will cost the city $331,000.

"We're just excited that it finally got started," Mabton Council member Oping Hutson said.
