Street closures for Sunnyside's Cinco de Mayo Festival, May 5-7, were approved last night by the city council.
The parade route for May 7 will close Edison Avenue from 16th Street to First Street from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. City Manager Bob Stockwell said the route is a bit smaller than past years, calling it "more realistic."
In other street closures, Sixth Street will be closed from Franklin to Decatur from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. for all three days of the festival.
Edison Avenue will be closed from Sixth Street to Seventh Street during the same time frame.
A carnival running 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. from Tuesday, May 2, to Sunday, May 7, will close Franklin between Fifth and Sixth Streets. It also will close a portion of Fifth Street between Grant and Edison.
In written comments to council, Stockwell said city staff reviewed the plans with the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce. He said the city will require additional clean-up during and after the festival, as well as private security during the festival.
"The closures are limited to the areas traditionally closed, and not the extended area used last year," he wrote.
Council approved the street closures, based on the changes from last year's event.
