MATTAWA - The Sunnyside Christian High School baseball team traveled to Mattawa to take on the Wahluke Warriors last Monday. The Knights gave up two runs in the sixth inning to lose to Wahluke 8-6.
SCHS took a 1-0 lead briefly in the first inning until the Warriors came up in the bottom of the first. The Warriors brought in three runs to take a 3-1 lead.
The Knights came back with two runs in the second to tie the game at 3.
Wahluke regained the lead in the third inning when they scored two runs.
The see-saw battle continued in the fourth when SCHS scored two runs to again tie the game, this time at 5 runs apiece.
Each team scored a run in the fifth inning and Wahluke scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
After SCHS failed to score any runs in the top of the seventh, the game was over.
Cole Van de Graaf and John Bosma pitched for SCHS. Van de Graaf pitched three innings, giving up four hits, five runs with two of them being earned. He walked three batters and threw five strike outs.
Bosma (1-2) earned the loss. He pitched for three innings, throwing four strike outs, walking five batters, giving up two hits and three earned runs.
Cole Van de Graaf also had a good day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double and a home run. He also had four RBIs.
Luke Meiniger was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Aaron Van de Graaf was 1-for-3 with a double. Brandon DeVries was also 1-for-3. Bosma went 1-for-4 with a double.
"Cole Van de Graaf was swinging a great bat," SCHS Assistant Coach Rob Faber said. "Luke was also hitting well."
The Knights (2-2, 3-5) will play the Sunnyside High School JV team this Saturday, April 15, at 11 a.m.
