CONNELL - Monday high school tennis matches are rare.
So rare that when Grandview found out just last Thursday that it was going to play Connell on Monday (yesterday) some players on the girls team were unable to participate.
"We never have Monday matches, so the girls had already made other commitments," said Coach Jaime Morales.
The result was a 5-0 loss for the girls team, leading to a split on the day as the Grandview boys prevailed 3-2.
There were still some players on the girls team that Grandview tennis fans will recognize, but several JV girls for Grandview had to make the jump up to varsity for Monday's CWAC South tilt at Connell. "It was good experience for the JV players," said Morales.
Christine Penwell of Grandview lost 6-0, 6-0 to Connell's Tara Domstad, and Sydney Mottice lost the other singles match to the Eagles' Claudia Vergara, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles play, Grandview's Miranda Shreeve and Cristina Meza lost 6-1, 6-3 to Andrea Berry and Emily McGary.
Kinzi Poteet and Rosalinda Godinez lost 6-0, 6-0 to Connell's Teddy Bear and Kasorn Phonesavanh.
Connell closed out the match with Corianna Corrarubias and Shaelah Easterday defeating Grandview's Haley Lindsley and Veronica Godinez 6-0, 6-0.
In boys competition, Kevin Floyd once again started Grandview with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash over Jon Leschinski in first singles play.
Connell knotted the boys match at 1-1 with Tyler Hawkins' 6-0, 6-1 victory over Grandview's Chase Lindsley.
The Greyhounds secured the boys match, and the split, with wins in boys first and second doubles.
"It was nailbiting time in the second set of the first two doubles matches," Morales said.
Joey Diaz and Marco Diaz, playing doubles together for the first time, battled for a 7-6, 6-2 win in first doubles over Connell's Matt Berry and Phitsanu Silnumkig.
In second doubles, Grandview's Nick Saldana and Rodrigo Fajardo won 6-4, 6-3 over Sammy Schlatter and Phitchet Silnumkig to clinch the team victory.
In third doubles, Grandview's Paulino Fajardo and Edgar Candido forced three sets before losing 6-2, 5-7, 6-0 to Connell's Josh Rider and Jon Alvarado.
The Grandview boys improved to 5-1 in league and 6-2 overall with the win. The girls now stand at 1-5 in league and 2-6 overall.
The Greyhound tennis teams will host Kiona-Benton this Wednesday in a make-up match that was rained out on March 25.
