UNION GAP - Jacqui Roberts turned in a pair of 2-for-4 performances yesterday, helping the Sunnyside Christian High School girls fastpitch softball team sweep a 'B' league doubleheader from the LaSalle Lightning.
The 5-2 and 14-3 victories improved the Lady Knights' conference mark to 8-0, 12-3 overall on the season. Tuesday's twin bill sweep also gives Sunnyside Christian a season sweep of the Lightning, as the Lady Knights defeated LaSalle twice two weeks ago.
Roberts figured in prominently in Sunnyside Christian's scoring in Tuesday's opener. She lashed an RBI single to give her club a 1-0 first inning lead, and added a triple in the fifth inning, when the Lady Knights plated a pair of insurance runs.
Sunnyside Christian took the lead for good in the opener in the top of the third. With two outs, Emily Hernandez drew a walk and Courtney Rice followed with a single. Both players moved up a base on a passed ball, which set up a two-run single by Emma Newhouse.
Hernandez tossed a two-hitter against LaSalle in the first game. She struggled slightly with her control, walking four and hitting two batters, but she did have nine strikeouts.
In Tuesday's nightcap, the game was called after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. The Lady Knights opened a 9-3 lead on LaSalle through the first three innings, then socked the game away with a five-run fifth.
Roberts and Hernandez each drove in a run, with a single and triple, respectively, in the first inning; and in the five-run third the Lady Knights got an RBI double from Newhouse, a triple from Melanie Van Wingerden and a single from Brittany denHoed.
For the game, Van Wingerden and Hernandez each went 2-for-3 at the plate, denHoed was 3-for-4 and Roberts was 2-for-4.
Tori Van Wingerden pitched the first four innings of the twin bill finale, collecting the win in the process. She allowed just one hit while fanning two and walking three.
Sunnyside Christian is scheduled to play a league doubleheader at Lyle this coming Friday. The SCHS girls defeated the Cougars back on April 11 by 10-0 and 4-1 scores.
