The community of Sunnyside already has the second lowest tax rate of all school districts in Yakima County. An affirmative vote for the $3.95 million bond issue that is now before local residents won't change that ranking. Sunnyside will still have the second lowest tax rate, and in the process the community gains a sparkling, new athletic complex that will serve the area's needs for years to come.
The ballots have arrived, by mail that is, and Sunnyside School District patrons are being asked to approve a measure that will raise their property taxes. It would be easy to cast a 'no' vote. Nobody likes paying more in taxes.
But before you mark your ballot, consider-how much bang will I be getting for my buck? Or in this case, for my 28 bucks. Because that's all one family who lives in a home valued at $100,000 will see in increased taxes each year.
Let's put it in these terms. For $28 you can't motor around the local golf course and get in even one round of golf. For $28 you and your spouse can't take your three kids to the local theater Saturday night to watch an action-packed thriller. For $28 your family of five can't eat out at a nice, sit-down restaurant and enjoy dinner together. Basically, the school district is asking local families to assess themselves a yearly tax increase that doesn't come close to what it would cost one family to entertain themselves on a Friday or Saturday night.
The bang for your buck? A brand new football and soccer stadium, complete with collegiate type bleachers and collegiate field turf that not only is easier to maintain, but is safer for our kids to play on. The outdoor athletic complex proposal for the local high school also includes resurfacing the track, realigning the baseball field, updating such amenities as the press box, public address systems and scoreboards, and building new restrooms for spectators and new locker rooms for the athletes, themselves. Also, new, expanded parking to accommodate visitors to the field, as well as a fenced-in walking path around the entire complex for the entire community to enjoy are all part of the plan to create what many believe will be a first rate athletic facility to be envied by all.
Bang for your buck? It's more like an explosion of returns when you consider everything the community will get in exchange for what amounts to less than what it costs for a night out on the town.
A 'yes' vote for this bond is one way to show your commitment to this community, that you believe in Sunnyside's growth, in its children and in its future. Right now, we all have an opportunity to invest in this community that we all have chosen to raise our families. A 'yes' vote is just another way of showing that we have pride in where we live.
We can't afford not to vote 'yes' in this special election, not when you consider what we'll be getting for such a small investment.
Join us in saying 'yes', we believe in Sunnyside and in helping to create something that will enrich many of our young people's lives for years to come.
