Police arrest man, recover stolen car

Sunnyside police recovered a stolen vehicle in the 200 block of Zillah Avenue and arrested a man, who was charged with possession of stolen property in the second degree, harboring a runaway and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The arrest was made at 11:23 p.m. last night, Aug. 30.

Brown Sox win weekend softball tournament

The Chicano/Latino Softball Tournament was held this past weekend at Sunnyview Park with El Valle Restaurant's Brown Sox scoring a perfect 5-0 record over seven other teams, four of which came from out of town to participate in this 32nd annual event.

Filling the boot for muscular dystrophy

Kiwanis clubs face changes

Lt. Gov. Darlene Green was the guest speaker at this morning's Kiwanis meeting. Green, although not a Sunnyside club member, was a delegate representing the Sunnyside Kiwanis Club at the Pacific Northwest District Convention. She gave a report about the convention, which took place Aug. 17-20 in Lincoln City, Ore.

A woman on her motorized newspaper route phoned Sunnyside police at 3:27 this morning to report she had picked up a female whom she saw thrown out of a red, four-wheel drive vehicle.

Race horse stolen from Scoon Road

Ten thefts were reported to Sunnyside police over this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Among them was the theft of a race horse from property in the 900 block of Scoon Road.

Swather fire extinguished

A swather and brush on fire at Independence and Lantz Roads brought just two firefighters out from Yakima County District #5 at 4:01 p.m. Saturday. The fire was extinguished with no extenuating circumstances.

An evening in the park benefits Sunnyside Hospital

The Sunnyside Community Hospital Foundation hosted an Evening in the Park at Grandview Country Park and Fairgrounds to raise funds via an auction for the Emergency Room Department remodel this past Saturday. The total cost of the project is $2.7 million. $1.2 million is presently invested by the Sunnyside Christian Hospital Foundation.

Tools taken in theft in S'side

Tools, saws, a jigsaw and a grinder were taken in a theft Sunday, Aug. 20, at a Sunnyside home in the 400 block of Merrick Avenue. It was noticed Sunday when the door was found open, but the owner waited until yesterday, Aug. 23, at 4:51 p.m. to contact police, who were given the name of a suspect.

Going A.P.E.S. for environmental education

Joyce Stark is teaching A.P.E.S., as she has aptly titled it, or Advanced Placement Environmental Science at Sunnyside High School. This is the first year that the year-long class will be taught and has sparked much interest amongst students, with 32 enrolled.

A year ago Elena Hazle, her two children, ages 9 and 3, and her father came to Sunnyside with little more than what they had on their backs. The family that had weathered Hurricane Katrina were relocated to Washington state and specifically to Sunnyside because the family of Hazle's fiancé, Jose Alvarez, resides here.

One arrested following July armed robbery attempt

On July 22, five masked people armed with guns entered a Sunnyside home in the 200 block of North 13th Street just after midnight, demanding money. This past Thursday, Aug. 10, Yakima police officers arrested one of the suspects, Elizia Davila, 20, in Yakima where she resides.

At 2:23 a.m. Sunday, Sunnyside police received a call from a female asking for help for her mother, who was being held in a bedroom by an ex-boyfriend who had gained entry through a window at a residence in the 500 block of Reeves Way.

Police find evidence of gunfire on Sunnyside's Newhouse Avenue

A local resident reported a volley of shots fired to Sunnyside police last night at 11:50 p.m. in the area of South Ninth Street and East Harrison Avenue. About 20 minutes later, a report was received from a resident in the 700 block of Newhouse Avenue that multiple shots had been fired there.
