GRANGER - Not to be confused with the 80s boys pop group by the same name, menudo-a home-cooked, tripe-laced stew-makes its return to Granger on Sunday, Aug. 13, for the third annual Washington State Menudo Cook-Off Championship.
The Granger Chamber of Commerce, the city of Granger and community volunteers will hold the cook-off at Hisey Park. Participants should have their entries submitted by 10 a.m. on Sunday. Judging begins at 1 p.m.
The cook-off features cash prizes of $300, $200 and $100 to first, second and third place finishers.
The Granger Chamber is again inviting mayors or council persons from different cities in the Lower Valley to conduct the judging.
Cook-off contestants are asked to bring a crock pot of menudo to the cook-off, which will be numbered to keep the names of the entrants secret.
All of the judges will be given taster bowls of menudo to evaluate the menudo samples on the following criteria: appearance, aroma, taste, texture and overall impression.
The cook with the highest total score will be deemed the winner.
Menudo soup dishes can range from hot and spicy to aromatic.
For more on the cook-off or to register, brochures can be picked up from any merchant in the city of Granger or downloaded from the Granger Chamber of Commerce website at wwwgrangerchamber.org.
Also at Hisey Park on the same weekend of Aug. 12-13 will be the R/C Unlimited miniature hydroplane races, a farmers market, live entertainment and activities for the whole family.
