E. ROLAND FLORY
E. Roland "Tiny" Flory, 84, of Walla Walla passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at St. Mary Medical Center.
Tiny was born March 29, 1922 in Grandview to Thurston and Mary Gosnell Flory. He attended schools in Grandview and graduated from Grandview High School in 1940. He attended Central Washington University, University of Washington and Washington State University, receiving degrees in education and his masters programs.
Tiny served in the Army Air Corps during WWII, returning to the Yakima Valley, where he met and married Joyce Binkley, Dec. 16, 1947 in Ellensburg. Tiny, Joyce and their family moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where he worked for the Alaska railroad. He then returned to education, first as a teacher, then a principal and finally as superintendent for several school districts in the state. He worked for four years for the Boeing Company. He retired in 1984.
Tiny was very active in several service organizations. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Washington Association of School Administrators, Mabton Lions Club, BPOE #287, American Legion Walter C. Lee Post #32, Enterprize Lodge #13, Washington State Prinicpals Association, Sunnyside Presbyterian Church, Volunteers in Mission for the Presbyterian Church in Utah, New Mexico and Sitka, Alaska.
He is survived by two daughters, Connie and husband, Gordon King, of Mabton and Julie Aldridge of Walla Walla; one son, Kenneth Flory and wife, Sheri, of Chandler; one brother, Wesley Flory and wife, Mary Lou, of Yakima; and two nephews and one niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joyce E. Flory, in 2002; and three brothers.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006, at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Walla Walla, with Rev. Albert Gillin officiating. A private family interment will be held. Memorials contributions may be made to Sheldon Jackson College, care of Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 West Alder, Walla Walla, WA 99362-2870. Herring Groseclose is in charge of arrangements.
