Sunnyside police investigate death

Sunnyside police officers found Justin Melendez, 23, dead at his residence at 507 South 12th Street after receiving a report of shots at 1:20 a.m. Saturday morning.

"The initial call was that one person had been shot," said Det. Sgt. Jeff Cunningham this morning.

The first report made to police apparently was from a woman who said her boyfriend had been shot.

"When officers arrived they located the victim at the residence and a firearm was recovered," said Cunningham, who added that Melendez resided in the house with a relative Cunningham declined to identify.

"We are waiting for an autopsy that will be done, probably today, before identifying the cause of death," said Cunningham.

He said Melendez appeared to have been shot, but no official word will be released until after a pathologist completes the autopsy.

He said detectives are still attempting to determine how many people, in addition to Melendez, were at the home at the time he died. The residence is a duplex, with one residence upstairs and one down.

Melendez's relatives, including his mother, Yolanda Melendez, were notified of his death before information was released to the media. A relative said the family has been advised by an attorney to make no statements at this time.
