Kindergarten program now offered in Mabton

MABTON - This fall Mabton parents will have an exciting new tool to help prepare their pre-school age children for school.

The Mabton School District has adopted "READY for Kindergarten!", a new learning program designed to teach parents how to be their child's most important teacher. "READY! for Kindergarten" is an educational program for parents that was developed by the Kennewick School District and is administered by the National Children's Reading Foundation.

The program was brought to the Mabton School District by board member Jeanette Williams, as one more tool to help Mabton children be successful learners. Williams said the program gives parents training three times a year The program gives parents the tools to begin providing their children with happy and successful learning experiences at each growth and learning stage of their lives.

For example, parents often wonder what a typical 5-year-old knows, or should know on the first day of school. There are readiness skills called "Kindergarten Targets," which parents can teach their children at home. By working on language and learning skills at home, children can get off to a great start at school.

The goal of the "Ready! for Kindergarten" program is to provide information to parents about how their child learns at each level, along with essentials tools and activities that they can do together to make learning easy and fun.

Parents with young children at home (newborn to age 5) are encouraged to sign up for the classes to ensure that their child will continue to enjoy learning as they grow.

The READY! for Kindergarten program will be introduced to parents with surveys in September, and classes are scheduled to begin in October at Artz-Fox Elementary School. The classes will provide parents with research-based information on how children learn and grow, as well as learning activities and materials to make learning at home fun. Classes will be offered in English and Spanish.

For more information or to sign-up for the first class call the Artz-Fox Elementary School at 894-441 or the Mabton School District office 894-4852. Parents are invited to visit
