Police find evidence of gunfire on Sunnyside's Newhouse Avenue

A local resident reported a volley of shots fired to Sunnyside police last night at 11:50 p.m. in the area of South Ninth Street and East Harrison Avenue. About 20 minutes later, a report was received from a resident in the 700 block of Newhouse Avenue that multiple shots had been fired there.

When Officer Kent Coffman investigated, he found nothing amiss following the first report, but discovered bullets embedded in the exterior wall of a house on Newhouse Avenue.

"And a vehicle was hit," Sgt. Guillen said this morning. "We are investigating and the case will stay active until we can get no further leads."

Two burglaries and a theft were also reported yesterday. An attempt was made to break into the Venus dance hall, reported at 11:31 a.m. yesterday (Wednesday), with nothing reported missing. The second burglary involved items taken from a shed that was broken into at a residence in the 700 block of Cemetery Road. That was reported at 7:32 p.m. yesterday.

The theft of a lawnmower was reported at 1:02 p.m. yesterday.

From 9:26 a.m. yesterday to 7:48 a.m. this morning, officers investigated four automatic alarms, five animal problems, a citizen dispute, one report of graffiti and two of harassment, one loiterer, two 911 hang-up calls, two suspicious people, one threat, two traffic problems, one vehicle prowl and one violation of a no-contact order.

They also served three arrest warrants, gave an assist to an agency, provided an extra patrol and received one informational call.
