Auto accident claims Mabton father and son

The State Patrol confirmed this morning that a Mabton father and son died Saturday evening, Aug. 19, when their vehicle struck another head-on while traveling on Alderdale Road, 18 miles south of Mabton.

According to the State Patrol, at about 10:36 p.m. a 1995 Toyota Camry, driven by 20-year-old Jesus Gutierrez Mendez of Mabton, crossed the center line while traveling southbound on Alderdale and collided head-on with a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Raul Fernandez Palominos, 22, of Outlook.

Palomino's vehicle was then hit from behind by a 2001 GMC Yukon driven by Salvador M. Estrada of Granger. Neither Estrada or his passengers were injured.

Gutierrez Mendez died later at Kadlec Medical Center in Richland. The passenger in his vehicle was his father, Roberto C. Gutierrez, 47, of Mabton who died at the scene.

Palominos and a passenger, 16-year-old Hugo Jimenez of Outlook, were both treated for injuries. Palominos was treated and released from Sunnyside Community Hospital, and Jimenez was admitted to the hospital with injuries. Due to a request by family members, no hospital information could be released on Jimenez's status.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation, according to the State Patrol, and all parties involved were wearing seat belts.
