FRESNO, CALIF. - Joey Elerding, a 16-year-old junior at Sunnyside Christian High School, placed in nine events as he competed in the Western Zone Swimming Championships Aug. 7-11 in Fresno.
Elerding swims year-round for the Tri-City Channel Cats and went to the Championships as part of the Inland Empire Swimming, which represents eastern Washington and northern Idaho, competing against 15 and 16-year-old boys.
Elerding placed first in the 16&U 400 meter freestyle event with a time of 4:11.55. He also took first-place honors by winning the 800 meter freestyle in 8:45.16.
He placed second in the 200 meter freestyle, clocking 1:59.55. Elerding then placed fourth in the 1,500 meter freestyle with a time of 16:32.04. He finished ninth in the 100 meter butterfly in 1:01.53.
Elerding also swam on four relays, the 200 and 400 meter freestyle relays and the 200 and 400 meter medley relays. The relays placed 10th, 4th, 3rd and 7th, respectively.
