Rape suspect captured

GRANGER - Less than 24 hours after he escaped custody from a Granger police officer on Wednesday evening, rape and assault suspect Elvin Acevedo Gomez was apprehended by police yesterday afternoon.

Granger Police Chief Robert Perales said a break in the search came just after 1 p.m. yesterday when police received a tip that Gomez was hiding inside a residence in the 300 block of Sunnyside Avenue in Granger.

Perales said his department received confirmation from two individuals in the home that Gomez was indeed at the address. Officers then received permission to enter the home.

With support from the State Patrol, Zillah and Yakima County law enforcement officers, Granger police surrounded the home and located Gomez hiding in a crawl space under the house.

Gomez was taken into custody without incident.

He now faces additional charges of first degree escape and third degree theft for removing and throwing into the Yakima River the handcuffs the Granger police officer had placed on him.
