ROYAL CITY - Turning in what Coach Mike Roettger described as one of the better man-to-man defensive efforts any of his teams have ever exhibited, the Mabton High School girls basketball team rolled past the Royal City Knights Tuesday evening, 52-29.
Roettger especially praised the defensive play of sophomore Ana Jimenez. "I put her on the Brown girl, and Ana held her to just four points," he said of Jimenez. Roettger said the 5'10" Brown, a guard, has the capability to light up the scoreboard, but last night Jimenez stayed in her face and thwarted most of her scoring opportunities.
Jimenez ended up with seven steals last night, many of them coming when the Knights tried getting the ball to Brown.
Not surprisingly, Jimenez also paved the way on the offensive side of the ball. The 5'6" guard dished a team best six assists while pouring in a game high 17 points.
"Ana's good enough to go on and play some community college ball and then end up her last two years at a school like Central (Washington University)," Roettger said. "She's a stud, and only going to get better."
Despite the lofty numbers Jimenez put up last night, Mabton received a healthy dose of quality play from several others, too.
Offensively, freshman Teresa Flores stood out by dropping in 14 points for Mabton, and teammate Kayla Campbell, only a sophomore, added six. Another sophomore, Trishi Williams, had a big night as well. She snared a team high 10 boards to lead the Lady Vikings to a 42 to 26 advantage on the glass. Williams popped in 9 points, as well.
Roettger said his team blocked out much better than in its season opener two nights ago, in explaining how Mabton came up with 16 more rebounds than Royal City. He said good positioning and quickness to the ball factored in perhaps more than the Lady Vikings' efforts at blocking out.
The Lady Vikes ran their defensive press for the first two and a half quarters, which resulted in Royal City coughing up the ball 52 times.
Mabton (1-1) is scheduled to host the Ki-Be Bears this Friday, and will travel to Riverview on Saturday.
