Charged power line lands on police car

MABTON - Those entering the city of Mabton from the highway last night at about 6:45 probably wondered why a police car was pulled over at the intersection of First and Jefferson streets, lights flashing, with a spot-light aimed at the sky.

Actually, it was aimed at a powerline hanging low over the roadway. While Interim Police Chief Robert Perales was on the phone at City Hall with the power company, the officer began to set up a road-block to avoid a vehicle hitting the line.

While trying to set up the road block, a semi-truck entered town, downing the charged line.

Said Perales,"The line snapped and landed on the top of the police car and actually extended to the hood of the car."

What did the officer do? "He hit the gas, got the line off the car and it landed on a fence."

Power in the city was only disturbed for a few moments and Pacifcorp arrived on scene and fixed the problem.
