SEATTLE - Unable to get motivated in yesterday's Seattle Christian Holiday Tournament championship game, the Mabton Lady Vikings dropped a 59-31 decision to Shoreline Christian.
Mabton earned a spot in the title game by defeating the host Seattle Christian Warriors on Wednesday, 72-68 in double overtime.
"I don't know if it was playing two overtimes the day before, the long bus ride or not getting to sleep in their own beds, but we didn't play well at all," Mabton Coach Mike Roettger said of the 28-point loss to Shoreline.
The Lady Vikes found themselves down only by four heading into the second quarter of Thursday's title tilt, but it all unraveled from there. "The second through fourth quarters we committed 30 turnovers, all of them against no press," said Roettger.
The troubles were compounded when Mabton's girls basically threw in the towel after halftime.
"We got very passive in the second half," Roettger said. "On offense, we were just standing around. No one was cutting to the open gaps.
"I can't explain it. It's like there was nothing left in our girls," he said.
The one Lady Viking who posted decent numbers against Shoreline Christian was Trishi Williams, a 5'7" sophomore who works the paint. Williams had 10 of Mabton's 31 points, and snagged a team high 10 rebounds.
Mabton's top scorer this season-Ana Jimenez, who normally is above the 20-point mark each game-was held to just seven points yesterday.
Shoreline Christian was led by the tandem of Colleen Woods and Julia DeKoekkoek, who tossed in 21 and 17 points, respectively.
Mabton (1-1, 5-4) is out of action until next Friday, Jan. 5, when the Lady Vikes travel to Cle Elum to take on the Warriors in an 'A' league contest. Roettger said the game is a must-win affair for his club, if his Lady Vikings are to contend for a postseason berth.
