SHORELINE - Down 10 points going into the locker room against the host Shoreline Christian Crusaders, it would have been easy for Sunnyside Christian to just roll over and accept their second defeat of the season.
But SCHS Coach Dean Wagenaar said his team wasn't ready to just get complacent and let the Crusaders get the win.
"We had to come back quite a bit," Wagenaar said.
At the start of the second half, the Crusaders came out and got two quick buckets to give them a 38-24 lead.
Poor defense was to blame for the defecit, Wagenaar said.
"We didn't play good man-to-man defense," he said.
And his team wasn't focused at the beginning, either.
"We were not focused at the start of that game," Wagenaar said.
Easy lay-ups, no defensive communication and no rotation by his team's players on defense were all to blame, Wagenaar said.
But in the second half, Wagenaar said his team came out ready to play.
"Chad (den Boer) played an outstanding second half," Wagenaar said.
Boy did he. With a team-high 26 points, den Boer also grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.
Aaron Van de Graaf also contributed to the scoring, dropping in nine points.
Joel Koopmans had a decent all around game. He scored eight points, had four assists and collected four rebounds.
Matt Haak contributed too. He had seven points.
Down the stretch, the Knights had a chance to ice the game in the last few minutes from the free throw line, but poor shooting there kept the game closer than it should have been.
The Knights went just 5-of-14 from the line.
But in the end the Knights pulled out the victory, and were able to keep the blemish off their record.
The Knghts (7-1) will travel to Bickleton this Friday night for a league game before hosting Yakama Tribal on Saturday night.
