Grandview Briefs

Council members sworn in

GRANDVIEW - Council members Joan Souders, Richard McLean, Pam Horner and Javier Lopez were all sworn in for their terms as members of the Grandview City Council Tuesday night.

Sounders, McLean and Horner were all elected to four-year terms while Lopez was elected to a two-year term.

Mayor Norm Childress was also sworn in Tuesday night. He defeated councilwoman Helen Darr for the city's top position in November's General Election.

Grandview adopts smoking ban

GRANDVIEW - Though voters passed Initiative 901 statewide, the City of Grandview Tuesday night voted to adopt the smoking ban so enforcement and court action can be taken against offenders in the city.

City Administrator Jim Sewell said the city needed to do so despite the fact that it is a statewide law.

Council adjusts water fees

GRANDVIEW - The City Council Tuesday voted to change all fees associated with obstructed meters, re-reads, turn-ons, new accounts and closing bills to $25 for water service.

This comes after last month's council meeting in which the council voted to increase water service fees for delinquent accounts in the city.

The increase in fees is meant to offset the cost of city employees visiting water customers houses and performing any of the specified tasks.

Last month, City Administrator Jim Sewell said fees were not high enough to cover the cost of performing those tasks, and Councilwoman Helen Darr suggested they be changed to cover city costs.

Drug Awareness Task Force recommendations tabled

GRANDVIEW - The Grandview City Council decided to table recommendations for its Drug Awareness Task Force Tuesday night following spirited debate at last month's council meeting.

The task force's recommendations, which included wording about being supportive of city staff, caused some of the council members to question whether certain wording was needed in the report.

Rick McLean and Bill Flory, who prepared the report, told the council they would go over the report one more time before presenting the final report to council for approval.
