YAKIMA - After a long Christmas Break, the Sunnyside High School boys swim team competed in a dual meet against Hanford and Pullman Thursday at Lions Pool.
Sunnyside lost to Hanford 69-41 and to Pullman by a score of 136-19, but the coach of the Sunnyside swim team was happy.
"Things went really well," Carl Scott said. "We've been training really hard over the break and we came back with some really good times. I was really proud of how all the guys did."
In the 100 freestyle, Anthony Kim of Sunnyside placed first against Hanford and Pullman, posting a time of 55.11. Teammate Danny Negrete followed Kim with a time of 1:16.40.
Kim was the only Sunnyside swimmer who swam in the 200 freestyle. His time of 1:55.19 placed him first against Hanford and second against Pullman.
Zile Wagner led all Sunnyside swimmers in the 50 freestyle with a time of 27.59. That placed him second against Hanford and fourth against Pullman. Teammate Alex Henry followed Wagner with a time of 28.79 and Negrete finished in 33.06.
Henry's time of 1:19.64 in the 100 breaststroke was good enough for first place against Hanford but only worth fourth place against the bigger team of Pullman. In the same event, Wagner swam a time of 1:22.48, good enough for third place against Hanford and fifth place against Pullman.
"Pullman has a really big team and I was impressed with how our guys did against them individually," Scott said.
All four swimmers for Sunnyside participated in the two relay events.
Sunnyside placed first against Hanford in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:58.46 and third against Pullman.
In the 200 medley relay, Sunnyside's time of 2:15.55 placed second against Hanford and third against Pullman.
"I was really happy with how Wagner has tried new events he usually doesn't do," Scott said. "He did really well in the breaststroke. Kim also had a really good meet as well. He got a couple of first place finishes and had a really good showing against both teams."
