Martin Luther King march scheduled for Monday

OIC of Washington and the Sunnyside Community Center are sponsoring a march and celebration in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. next Monday.

The march, which is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, will begin at 626 Railroad Ave., the site of OIC of Washington office, and will end at the Sunnyside Community Center a half hour later where march participants and the public can participate in activities.

Beth Bourgeois, program coordinator for Constructing and Circle of Success at AmeriCorp, said the march is important to the organization because it's a national day of service.

Bourgeouis said a lot of people think King was just an advocate for African American people, but that's not true.

"He was an advocate of rights for all people," she said.

Following the march, Bourgeois said several booths will be set up at the community center for children and their parents, and several speakers will talk about the importance of King in terms of his impact on history.

She said some people will even give King's famous "I have a dream" speech.

Bourgeois said she didn't know at this point who the speakers were going to be, but said some would also talk about similarly important historical figures.

Refreshments will be available at the community center also. Bourgeois said volunteers have collected donations from several towns in the Lower Valley.

Entertainment will run from 11 a.m. to noon.
