MABTON - A home on 791 Boundary Road, about a mile south of Mabton, was declared a total loss of $100,000 following a fire Thursday morning.
The house, owned by Kyle Shinn according to the fire report, was vacant at the time of the blaze.
Three stations and 18 firefighters from Yakima County Fire District #5 arrived to battle the fire, which began at around 8 a.m.
District #5 Captain Pat Mason reported there was already fire throughout the house when crews showed up. "It was well into the walls and the attic," he said.
Due to the building's weakened condition, Mason said firefighters fought the blaze defensively from the outside.
Making the job more difficult is that the main part of the fire was located in area above a cellar.
It took firefighters just over two hours to fully extinguish the flames.
Mason said it has not yet been determined in what part of the house the fire started.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation by the Yakima County Fire Prevention Bureau.
