WHITE SWAN - Mabton's wrestling team secured its first dual meet win of the season Thursday in a 51-13 victory over White Swan.
"We did excellent last night," enthused Coach John Kilian. "We had been giving up four or five pins every match, but we were only pinned once at White Swan."
After Carlos Mendez secured a forfeit win for the Vikings at 112 lbs., Eric Meza scored the first of five pins for Mabton at 119 lbs.
"He usually wrestles at 103 so he did a great job for us," Kilian said of Meza.
Andy Rivera received a forfeit win at 125 lbs. and Andy Torres earned a pin for Mabton in the 130-lb. weight division.
The Vikings' Anthony Rubio moved up a weight division to 140 lbs. and still pinned his opponent. "He did a great job," said Kilian.
Cesar Macedo received a forfeit at 160 lbs. and Damien Marquez pinned his opponent in the 189-lb. weight division.
Wrapping up the match were Eli Perez with a win at 215 lbs. and Robert Marquez, who won with a pin in the 275-lb. weight division.
Mabton's only losses were at 135, 152 and 171 lbs.
The victory puts the Vikings at 1-1 in league matches and 1-2 overall in dual contests.
Mabton travels to Royal City this Saturday for the Royal Rumble Tourney.
"That will be a pretty tough tournament for us," Kilian said. "There will be a lot of good teams, and it will be a test for the guys."
He noted that host Royal has several state placers returning from last year.
"I'm hoping when the day is done we're still wrestling like crazy," he added.
