G'view secures CWAC South second-place finish

CONNELL - The Grandview wrestling team wrapped up a second-place finish in the CWAC South with a 53-18 victory over Connell Tuesday night.

Three pins by the 'Hounds helped build a big lead, along with forfeits.

Strong wrestling in the middle and upper weights also helped Grandview get the victory.

Grandview opened the night by receiving a forfeit at 275-lbs.

Christian Alvarez's decision at 103-lbs. and Daniel Armenta's pin at 112-lbs. gave Connell a brief lead, but pins by Dalton Walker at 119-lbs. and Fernando Godinez at 130-lbs., interrupted only by a Connell pin by Wes Jenks at 125-lbs., started a steak of point scoring for the 'Hounds.

A 9-0 decision by Max Saldana at 135-lbs., followed by forfeits at 140 lbs. and 145 lbs., helped the 'Hounds build a lead that the Eagles would not be able to overcome, despite the efforts of Connell's Ruben Orozco at 152 lbs., who pinned Grandview's Greg Gonzalez.

But following that pin, Grandview wouldn't lose another match.

Jacob Robillard got a 6-4 decision over Gabe Martinez in overtime at 160 lbs.

Tovias Magana got a first-period pin over Jonathan Lopez in 1:46 at 171 lbs.

Overall, Grandview Coach Jeff Sevigny said he was pleased with the effort of his wrestlers following two less-than stellar showings last week.

"We kind of bounced back from last week," Sevigny said. "We didn't make the mistakes we were making last week."

And the mistakes they were making last week included coming out flat, and not making good decisions on the mat.

Sevigny said his team is definitely ready for the District tourney coming up Feb. 3 and Feb. 4 in Othello.

"Our focus now is districts," he said.

Sevigny said the tournament will likely come down to Grandview and Othello for the District title.

He said his team is stronger in the heavier weights, while Othello is stronger in the lighter weights. The middle weights are a wash, he said.

Grandview will face Hanford Friday night in a non-league dual that was added after a schedule was printed. The dual meet will give the 'Hounds a chance to wrestle without having a long lay off before Districts.

The match at Hanford is scheduled for 7 p.m.
