GRANGER - It was a split decision for Mabton wrestlers last night, recording a 39-32 win over Goldendale while losing 55-16 to Granger.
"We were outmatched in some of the Granger matches," said Viking Coach John Kilian. "They have some very good wrestlers. A couple of our varsity guys weren't there, so we had JV players replacing them against very tough opponents."
Mabton's highlights against Granger included Eli Perez's 11-2 victory over Guillermo Galeno at 189 lbs. and Robert Marquez's pin over Jose Morales in the 215-lb. weight division.
Tony Vargas drew a forfeit win for the Vikings. Cesar Macedo wrestled one of the closest matches on the night, losing 3-2 to Granger's Miguel Rivera.
It was a different story against Goldendale, as Mabton held on for a 39-32 win over the Timberwolves.
"That one came down to the final match," said Kilian.
Battling an opponent who had pinned him this past Saturday, Mabton's Eric Meza avoided a pin in the final match at 103 lbs. and, though he lost, preserved the Viking victory.
"Eric put out a good effort there after getting walloped on Saturday," Kilian observed. "He foiled Goldendale's last-minute run."
Andy Rivera won by forfeit at 125 lbs. to score for Mabton, and Tony Vargas did the same at 130 lbs.
In the 160-lb. weight division, Cesar Macedo defeated Goldendale's Jared Witt 8-2.
Mabton's Adrian Magana and Eli Perez earned pins at 171 and 189 lbs., respectively.
Damien Marquez and Robert Marquez received forfeit wins for Mabton at 215 and 275 lbs., respectively.
Another Mabton highlight in the two dual matches is that Angelo Salinas recorded two victories in JV matches.
The split moved Mabton's league dual meet record to 3-2 and 3-3 overall.
The Vikings wrap up the regular season at home against Zillah this Thursday.
