PROSSER - Besides the 14 varsity wrestlers Sunnyside will have competing at this coming Friday and Saturday's Sub-Regional tournament, the Grizzlies will be represented by nine of their JV grapplers at the postseason affair.
The nine wrestlers earned berths to the Sub-Regional competition by placing in the top three of their respective weight divisions at this past Saturday's league JV qualifying tournament, hosted by Prosser.
Of the nine Grizzly JV wrestlers who'll advance to Sub-Regionals, two came out on top of the heap at the junior varsity qualifying tourney this past Saturday. The two first place finishers were seniors Joel Gaspar at 112 lbs. and Victor Reyes at 125 lbs.
Reyes will take the No. 1 JV seed into Sub-Regionals, however, Gaspar moves up to the No. 7 varsity seed because only six of the Mid-Valley League's seven teams have a varsity wrestler at 112 lbs.
Earning No. 2 JV seeds into Sub-Regionals this past Saturday were Sunnyside's Steven Romero, a freshman wrestling at 103 lbs., freshman Jordan Pace at 145 lbs., junior Daniel Pineda at 172 lbs. and freshman Victor Rivera at 189 lbs.
The three other junior varsity Grizzlies to qualify for Sub-Regionals, with No. 3 JV seeds, were freshman Shawn Olivarez at 119 lbs., senior Filiberto Cervantes at 160 lbs. and senior David Miranda at 215 lbs.
Two of Sunnyside's wrestlers competing at last Saturday's JV qualifying tournament finished fourth in their respective weight classes, and both will advance to Sub-Regionals as alternates, in case illness or injury forces out a seeded wrestler. The two include Isidro Macias at 130 lbs. and Jesus Mendoza at 152 lbs.
This year's Sub-Regional tourney will be hosted by Sunnyside. The action will begin this Friday at 2 p.m., with second day action to commence at noon on Saturday. Besides the seven Mid-Valley League teams, the Sub-Regional competition will include the five Frontier League teams-Spokane's West Valley, East Valley and North Central high schools, as well as Clarkston and Cheney.
