Fundraiser planned for Prosser runner

PROSSER - Nectaly Barbosa of Prosser is the 3A State champion in the 800 meters, the second fastest runner in the nation in that event and he's still only a high school junior.

Barbosa's exploits in the 800 have earned him invites to four prestigious track events this summer.

They are the Golden West in Sacramento, Calif., on June 11, the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, Ind. from June 22-26, the Regional Junior Olympics in Salem, Ore. July 7-8 and the National Jr. Olympics in Maryland on July 25-29.

As a result, Barbosa's brother and sister-in-law, Carlos and Janie Barbosa of Grandview, are planning a fiesta fundraising dinner on his behalf.

The fiesta fundraiser dinner will be held Friday, June 9, between 5 and 7 p.m. at the Princess Theater in Prosser.

Tickets will be available at the Prosser Farmer's Market on Saturday, June 3, or they can be ordered by calling Janie Barbosa at 509-882-3945.

The dinner will cost $7 for adults. The charge will be $5 for seniors, children, and seniors. The dinner will feature chicken mole.

The fundraiser proceeds will go to his travel and registration expenses for the competitions, said Janie.

"Up to this point in time, the Barbosa family has paid for his expenses out of pocket and with a small tamale sale to help," Janie said. "This year, because he has four major events to go to, it would be next to impossible for them to do it themselves again."

Janie said one of Nectaly's priorities before his senior year of high school is to decide on which university he will attend to continue pursuing his track career in the 800 meters.
