The fourth annual Sunnyside High School alumni girls soccer game is scheduled for this coming Saturday. Soccer fans this year will be treated to more than just one game, though, as two other soccer matches will also be staged that day.
The June 10 soccer extravaganza will open with a 3 p.m. match featuring the 2006 SHS spring season boys soccer team pitted against former Grizzly players. Sunnyside High School's all-time leading boys scorer, Junior Garcia, will headline the alumni squad. SHS's No. 2 all-time leading boys scorer and current Grizzly head boys coach Juan Pineda has also committed to playing for the alumni team.
The second of the three matches, set to begin at 5 p.m., will give local fans a glimpse of the future of Sunnyside High School girls soccer. That game will pit the current school year's eighth grade girls squad against the ninth grade team.
"It will be an opportunity for these younger girls to showcase their skills," said SHS girls coach Kathy Jolliff. "It's a chance for people to see the upcoming talent."
The featured match of the day on the SHS soccer field is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Saturday evening. Jolliff said her 2005-06 Lady Grizzly squad will take on a group of alumni girls players, all of whom graduated between 1996 and 2005. Jolliff said she has 17 or 18 former players who have already committed to playing. Any other alumni interested in playing that night should contact Jolliff immediately (840-3489).
Although there isn't a set fee for admission to Saturday's games, Jolliff said donations will be accepted at the gate. That money, along with financial sponsorships from local businesses, will be used to purchase equipment for the SHS girls soccer program and to help fund the July 10-14 University of Washington summer camp that many of the 2006-07 players will be attending next month.
"This is the fourth year we've held our alumni soccer game," Jolliff said. "It's become a fun tradition, and we're encouraging all of the soccer fans in the community to turn out Saturday and watch."
