MABTON - The fourth renewal of the Miss Mabton Pageant is set for this Friday at 7 p.m. in the Artz-Fox Elementary School gym.
One of the pageant's organizers, Phyllis Aguilar, said the event was re-instituted after a seven-year hiatus.
"We started it again because the town wasn't doing anything and we wanted to get it going," she said.
Aguilar said the girls carry out fundraisers throughout the year to pay for their activities as part of the Mabton court.
The criteria for selecting Miss Mabton is based on grades, personality and school activities, she said.
Friday's pageant will feature a modeling display of casual and formal wear. Each candidate will also perform during a talent portion of the event.
One of the three finalists for the title of Miss Mabton is Belica Gutierrez, 16, who will be a junior at Mabton Jr./Sr. High School next year. She is the daughter of Josefa and Miguel Gutierrez and has four brothers and two sisters.
Another candidate is 17-year-old Juliana Alaniz, who will also be a junior. She is the daughter of Jaime and Sandra Alaniz and has two brothers and one sister.
Rounding out the list of candidates is Sierra Rivera, 15, who will be a sophomore next year. She is the daughter of Jose and Rachel Ruelas and has four brothers and one sister.
While there is mystery as to who the next Miss Mabton will be from among the three finalists, the new Mr. Mabton is all but decided.
The lone finalist for Mr. Mabton is Joaquin Aguirre, 16, who will be a junior at Mabton Jr./Sr. High School next year. He is the son of Celestina and Ciprano Aguirre and has two brothers.
Tickets for Friday's pageant are $5 for adults, $3 for students and $2 for elementary-school aged children. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for the event. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling Aguilar at 894-4964 or Rachel Ruelas at 831-2217.
Aguilar noted that the tickets purchased for the event will also qualify audience members for prize drawings to be held throughout Friday night's pageant.
