Grandview Neptunes fall to Toppenish Tarpons, 418-321

TOPPENISH - Missing some key swimmers, the Grandview Neptunes traveled to Toppenish Tuesday night, losing 418-321.

The Neptunes started out hot, winning five of the seven medley relays to take a 25-10 lead after the first event. After that it was a different story. While the Neptunes won a lot of the events out right, Toppenish swimmers took a lot of the number two, three and four spots to get points and build their lead.

Grandview's Meghan Marquez, Tamika Pierce, Taylor Hall and Tiana Perez teamed up to win the girls 10&U medley relay. Teammates Trent Mottice, Brian Michener and Garrett Walker won for the boys 14&U. Grandview's Allison Grow, Larelle Michener, Brittany Contreras and Brittnee Sanchez took first-place honors for the girls 18&U class, and Jase Michener, Dalton Walker, Marvin Stuber and Keagan Christensen of the Neptunes won the event in the boys 18&U group.

Grandview's Jared Churchill won four of the five individual events he swam in the boys 12&U group. He dominated in the 50-meter butterfly, beating his nearest competitor by just under six seconds. He barely beat out Ryan Johnson of Toppenish in the 50-meter breaststroke and beat Toppenish swimmer Nicholas Huylar in the 50-meter freestyle by six-tenth's of a second. Although he finished fourth in the backstroke, Churchill managed to find his stroke for the individual medley and win that event by nine seconds.

Grandview's Sydney Mottice swept all of her events in the girls 16&U group. Mottice earned the Neptunes six points apiece in the 50-meter butterfly, 50-meter breaststroke, 50-meter backstroke and the 50-meter freestyle.

In girls 12&U, Jessica Hall placed in five events for Grandview, winning two. She anchored the girls 50-meter medley relay team with Karissa Carpenter, Sara Roberts and Hannah Grow, to a first-place finish. In the 50-meter freestyle she beat out Toppenish's Micaela Clark for the win. She took second in the 50-meter individual medley and third in both the 50-meter butterfly and the 50-meter backstroke.

In the butterfly event, Allison Grow beat out teammates Larelle Michener and Brittnee Sanchez in the girls 18&U group.

In the breaststroke, Sara Roberts took first place in the girls 12&U class, handily beating Amber Sauerwein from Toppenish by three seconds. Brian Michener edged out three Toppenish swimmers in the same event to win for the boys 14&U group. Brittnee Sanchez and Larelle Michener took 1-2 in the same event.

In the backstroke, Grandview's Jessica Denton won in the girls 8&U class. Karissa Carpenter led a 1-2-3 finish for Grandview in the girls 12&U age group. Larelle Michener won for the Grandview girls in the 18&U category.

Brittnee Sanchez took first place in the freestyle event for the girls 18&U. She was followed by teammates Larelle Michener and Allison Grow.

In the girls 10&U freestyle relay, Tamika Pierce, Tiana Perez, Meghan Marquez and Taylor Hall won to add to their medley relay victory. The Grandview girls 12&U squad also won this event but the team members were not identified.

In the individual medley, Karissa Carpenter took first place in the girls 12&U age group while Brian Michener took first place for the boys 14&U group. His brother Jase Michener took first place in the event for the boys 16&U group.

The loss drops the Neptunes to 1-2 on the season. Grandview has a bye this Thursday but will host Sunnyside Tuesday, June 27.
