Bender cards low round at PGA pro-am tourney

SELAH - Sunnyside Black Rock Creek club pro Jeff Bender tied for top honors at a Central Washington PGA Pro-Am Tournament staged at Selah's Yakima Elks Golf & Country Club this past Monday.

Bender and Bear Mt. Ranch club pro Von Smith both carded 5-under-par 66's. The next closest golfer to them in the professional division was Rob Clark of the Wenatchee Golf & Country Club, who toured the 18-hole course with a 1-under 70.

The Monday, June 19, tourney was the 13th of 24 pro-am events being sanctioned this year by the Central Washington chapter of the PGA. Monday's tournament drew a field of 140 professional and amateur golfers.

Enroute to posting the low round of the day, Bender scored twice in the professionals' skins game, carding a 3 on the seventh hole and a deuce on the 13th.

The lone amateur from Sunnyside's Black Rock Creek Golf Course to cash at Monday's pro-am was Mike Van Wingerden. He fired a 2-over-par 73 for the third low amateur round, just two shots back of the leader-Ray Gallipo of Sun Tides Golf Course, who posted an even-par 71. Jared Braylock of the LaGrande, Ore. Golf Course had the second low round among the amateurs-a 1-over 72.
