Sharks chew up Tarpons, 546-256

photo

Katie Knee of Sunnyside churns through the water in last night's girls 16 & under, 50-meter butterfly race. Knee sped to a clocking of 34.71 seconds to earn top honors.

Sunnyside had no answers for the Galaviz siblings, Anthony and Sabrina. But the rest of the night belonged to the Sharks.

Upping its Mid-Valley Summer Swim League record to 3-0, Sunnyside powered past the visiting Toppenish Tarpons Thursday evening, 546-256.

Although the Sharks easily out-distanced Toppenish in picking up victories last night, claiming 48 wins to the Tarpons' 26 first place finishes, it was Sunnyside's team depth that did in the visiting club. The Sharks outscored Toppenish by a 152-68 margin in second place points, and enjoyed 86-18 and 35-13 advantages in third and fourth place points, respectively.

Of the 26 victories the Tarpons collected last night, the Galaviz brother-sister duo figured in on 13 of them. Younger sister Sabrina swept the five individual races in the girls 14&U bracket, and brother Anthony followed suit in the boys 16&U age division. The two Galaviz's also swam on three winning relay squads, the only victories of the night for Toppenish in the relay competitions.

While it was Sunnyside's overall team depth that was the story of the night, the Sharks did have a pair of swimmers who stood out from the pack. The two, Crystal Moore and Toni Marie Castillo, were virtually unstoppable.

Moore, an 18 & under competitor, made it a perfect 7-for-7 against Toppenish. She swam on both winning girls 18 & under relay teams, and swept all five races in her age division. Laura Drews, the only swimmer the Tarpons could throw at Moore, never seriously challenged the Shark in any of the races, finishing approximately nine seconds behind Moore in each of the 50-meter sprints.

Castillo was just as dominant at girls 12 & under, winning all four of the 50-meter dashes. She was most impressive in the butterfly, claiming a 15.5-second margin of victory over her closest competitor. Castillo also picked up a pair of relay wins, although opted out of competing in the 200-meter individual medley.

Tad Tyhuis, too, had a big night for the Sharks. Competing in the boys 10 & under division, he was more than seven seconds faster than Toppenish's best swimmer in that age division, Enrique Davalos, in the 50-'fly. Tyhuis also picked up wins in the 50-backstroke, nearly 10 seconds faster than the second place finishing Davalos; and in the 50-freestyle, where he clocked a time of 39.88 seconds, a full 1.33 seconds ahead of Davalos, the runner-up. Tyhuis capped off his night with a first place clocking of 4:03.12 in the 200-IM, which bested the second place time of teammate Austin Garza by more than 54 seconds.

Sunnyside's Cristian Vargas and Tim Stiteler had nights to remember, as well. The two boys 12 & under swimmers teamed up for five first place finishes and five runner-up performances, and swam on the two winning relay teams in their age division.

Also coming through big for the Sharks were girls 16 & under competitors Kaitlyn Broersma and Katie Knee. Broersma won the 50-breast, 50-back and 200-IM races, adding a pair of relay wins and three second place finishes as well. Knee also had a pair of relay wins, and was victorious in the 50-butterfly and 50-freestyle events. She notched two second place finishes, too.

Jacob Hollander of Sunnyside continued his winning ways, as well. A boys 14 & under swimmer, he grabbed top finishes in the 50-'fly, the 50-free and the 200-IM. Hollander also was on both winning relay squads in his age division.

The Sharks return to league action next Tuesday, June 27, when they travel to Grandview to take on the Neptunes (1-2).
