A meeting was held last night (Wednesday) at the Law and Justice Center regarding Sunnyside's "National Night Out." This is a program funded by local police departments to promote neighborhood unity in the fight against crime.
"National Night Out" is set to kick-off in Mabton at Feezell Park this year, where the residents of Sunnyside, Granger, Grandview and Mabton will meet on Monday, July 31. Tuesday, Aug. 1, is when the block parties will be taking place around local communities.
Local vendors will set up tables at Feezell Park. The Health Department will bring its van that shows children how to properly wash their hands. The Sunnyside Miss Cinco de Mayo Court is tentatively scheduled to make an appearance as well.
There were 12 block parties last year in Sunnyside and 10 block parties are already set for this year in Sunnyside. The Sunnyside Police Department will provide sheet cakes or watermelons, bottles of water, door prizes, t-shirts, hot dogs and hot dog buns. More than 50 businesses are committed to donating toys and other prizes.
The Sunnyside Police Department is hoping to get off-duty police officers to host barbecues in their neighborhoods.
Those interested in hosting a block party are asked to contact the local police department. The police department will help block off the streets. Chico Rodriguez is the contact person for the Sunnyside Police Department and he can be reached at 836-6211.
