MABTON - The Mabton City Council awarded the City of Mabton Well #5 bid to a Tri-Cities company, Blue Star Enterprises.
The contract is for $331,199.05. This is in contrast to the $550,000 bid the city received in December.
"This was because the original design called for a large diameter," Alan Rainey, an engineer with Spink Engineering, told the council at last night's meeting. "This was in case the aquifer dropped we could go back in and drill the well deeper."
Because the bid was more than the city expected, the well was re-designed to meet just the needs for today and bidding was re-opened.
"We were hoping the project would cost $250,000," Ildia Jackson, Mabton's City Administrator, said. "Because we have strict time demands we had to pay a little more but it's not unreasonable."
Jackson said work on the well should start by the end of March or the beginning of April.
Also at last night's meeting, the board gave permission to let Spink Engineering oversee the construction of the sidewalk project. The Department of Transportation has given permission for the city to start designing the improvements for the sidewalks on Fifth, Sixth and Beech streets. The city has already received a grant for the work.
According to Jackson, once the city has come up with the design, the Department of Transportation must approve the design. Once this is done, the city will be able to start taking bids on the project.
"We're hoping to get started no later than July," she said.
