Sunnyside's sophomore laden team kicked off its season two days earlier than scheduled, defeating Goldendale by 22 strokes Monday afternoon on the Grizzlies' Black Rock Creek home course.
Justin Bos and Andrew Swinehart, both Sunnyside sophomores, fired a pair of 2-over-par 38's to share medalist honors in the 9-hole competition. Teammates Sam Bardell and Nigel Weenink, also sophomores, rounded out the Grizzly scoring with a 46 and 60, respectively.
Goldendale's low scorer was Kyle Titus, who finished with a bogey-like round of 45.
The Grizzlies defeated the Timberwolf golfers by a score of 182-204. The four low individual rounds comprised each team's scoring.
Bos, in shooting a 38, started his front nine play by absorbing a double bogey on the first hole. Birdies on 4 and 5 minimized the damage, however, and with four pars and two bogeys Bos was able to recover to share medalist honors.
Swinehart was a steady eddie throughout the nine-hole affair-picking up pars on seven of the holes and taking just two bogeys along the way.
Bardell, despite shooting a 46, impressed Sunnyside Coach Glenn Braman. "It was pretty good for his first time out this year," Braman said, noting that Bardell wasn't in a lot of competitive situations his freshman season.
Weenink, who took up golf just last year, was playing in only his second ever competition. As a freshman, said Braman, Weenink routinely carded a 90 for nine holes of golf. The 60 he recorded yesterday, Braman added, is a marked improvement from last season.
"We're a young team-all sophomores," Braman said. "We'll be learning as the season goes along."
Sunnyside will host Riverside Christian this coming Wednesday. The 18-hole match is scheduled to begin at about 1:30 p.m.
