Michels 14th at Wildhorse Invite

PENDLETON, ORE. - Considering there were 97 prep golfers competing Monday at the 20-school Wildhorse Invitational, Grandview High School senior Andrew Michels fared extremely well with his 14th place individual finish.

"It was mostly all 4A schools," said Dave Ugetti, coach of the 2A Grandview Greyhound linksters.

Michels, a senior, carded a pair of 1-over-par 37's on each of the Wildhorse nines for his 74.

"Pretty good, considering Andrew just finished up basketball season a week ago," said Ugetti.

Grandview's three other golfers who had their scores applied towards the Greyhound team total included T.J. Bolt, Spencer Lewis and Aaron Riggs. The trio shot rounds of 96 (45-51), 100 (47-53) and 102 (49-53), respectively.

Grandview's collective score of 372 beat out just one of the teams entered in the tourney. Understandable, said Ugetti, when you consider nearly all the schools entered fall under the 4A classification.

Yesterday's Wildhorse Invite also featured a girls competition. Drawing a field of 41 golfers, Grandview sophomore Katie Veloz represented the 'Hounds well. She hit the turn with a 43 on her scorecard, ballooning a bit on the back side to a 50. The 93, however, was good enough for Veloz to bring home sixth place individual honors.

At the present time, Veloz is the only girl on the Grandview team.

Veloz got her first taste of competition this season at last Friday's Hanford Invitational, staged at the West Richland Golf Course. The sophomore fired a 98 on the par-72 course, which beat out more than half the field.

Grandview's boys opened the season last Friday at the Othello Invitational. The host Huskies won the 10-school tourney by shooting an aggregate 187. The Greyhounds finished in sixth place with a 222.

Grandview's top shooter at Othello was Michels. He posted a 6-over-par 76 on front and back nines of 39-37. Riggs and Trevino had rounds of 97 and 98, respectively. In the 9-hole portion of the invite, Bolt and Lewis posted scores of 49 and 51, respectively.

The Grandview boys and girls golf teams' next scheduled competition is Tuesday, March 28, at the West Valley Invitational, at Apple Tree Golf Course.
