Goins second, Bender fourth at PGA pro-am

KENNEWICK - Robbie Goins, representing Sunnyside's Black Rock Creek Golf Course, carded the second lowest round of all the amateurs at this past Monday's season opening Les Schwab Tire Centers Pro-Am Series tournament.

The Monday, March 20, competition was the first of 24 pro-am tournaments being sponsored by the Central Washington chapter of the PGA this year. The season opener was staged at the par-65 Tri-City Country Club in Kennewick. The tourney drew a field of 110 professional and amateur golfers.

Goins finished his 18-hole round with a 4-over-par 69, tying him with two others for runner-up honors among the amateurs. The low amateur round was claimed by Dan Whitaker of Ellensburg, who finished with a 2-under-par 63.

Black Rock Creek club pro Jeff Bender scored a fourth place finish in the professional division. He fired a 1-over-par 66, four strokes off the winning pace. The low round of 62 was recorded by Von Smith of Bear Mt. Ranch.

During this year's Les Schwab pro-am series, approximately a quarter of a million dollars in prizes and purses will be distributed to the competitors.
