Citizens of Sunnyside:SYRA needs your help and support!
In 1981 Dave Fonfara had been hired as the Parks and Rec Director for the City of Sunnyside, but without any program funding. He got together with a group of parents from the community and the Sunnyside Youth Recreation Association (SYRA) was formed. Our purpose was to provide assistance with the growth and development of diversified community recreation activities, areas of facilities for the youth of the community through various support activities.
Over the past 25 years SYRA has contributed to the youth of Sunnyside in many ways, a few of which are listed below:
• development of new park facilities in Sunnyside;
• scholarship funds for participation fees of needy youth;
• 5,000.00 donation to Sunnyside Kiwanis Youth Park;
• $500 donation to Washington School Playground;
• $500 donation to the Lions Club Picnic Pavilion;
• SYRA Triathalon in August for over 15 years;
• support of the Parks & Rec Department after school program.
Very important to SYRA over the past 25 years has been its non-profit status with the State of Washington. This has allowed SYRA to do much for the youth of Sunnyside that other organization can not. Our desire is that non-profit status continue to benefit the youth of our community.
Here, is our problem. Our current officers and board members have been with SYRA since its inception in 1981. However, it is time to move on as we no longer have kids in Sunnyside youth programs. Additionally, there are so many more youth oriented activities and groups out there that we feel could really benefit from the non-profit status. We need to get these new groups to take over SYRA and its non-profit status to continue helping the youth of our community. If no one steps forward, SYRA will go away at the end of April.
Please help the youth of Sunnyside. We will have a meeting on Monday, April 17th, at 6 p.m. at the Community Center, South Hill Park, to move SYRA forward. Talk to as many parents, groups, churches, etc as you can and come to the meeting. Any questions, please call Joan Niemeyer at the Parks and Rec Department, 837-8660 or call me 840-2434.
