S'side boys corral Prosser Mustangs

It's a familiar refrain for the Sunnyside tennis team.

The boys, led by ace Danny Plesha, dominate their opponents while the rebuilding Lady Grizzlies team just misses a victory.

That proved to be the case against Prosser this past Friday, as the Sunnyside boys won 5-0 over the Mustangs and the Lady Grizzlies lost yet another heartbreaker 3-2.

"Seven of our losses have been 3-2," said Sunnyside coach Troy Whittle. "The girls are working hard but the killer instinct isn't there."

The girls, now 2-8 in league and 3-9 overall, are not that far from reversing those numbers, despite only having two returners from last season.

Sunnyside's Jerika Martinez beat Diana Smith 6-4, 6-0 to open the match with a Grizzly win.

Teammate Jessica Gudino followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Alicia Young.

The Lady Grizzlies couldn't maintain the 2-0 lead, though, as Prosser swept doubles play for the team win.

Prosser's Sophie Benson and Lauren Fiedler defeated Helen Shuttleworth and Regina Mendez 6-4, 7-5 in No. 1 doubles.

Molly Field and Kaley Adams followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Sunnyside's Capri Miles and Hannah Paulakis.

Susan Wilson and Ali Suhadolink of Prosser closed the match with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Addy Hernandez and Gayle Hansen.

Plesha sparked the Sunnyside boys with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewashing over Trevor Fox.

Sunnyside's Justin Snyder defeated Kellen Crawford 6-2, 6-4 to put Sunnyside up 2-0.

The rout was completed with a sweep in doubles play.

Tyler Thompson and Jake Wavrin of Sunnyside beat Homer Gongora and Jake Love 6-3, 6-2 in No. 1 doubles.

Hunter Van deGraaf and Mitchell Sanchez followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win over C.J. Fulton and Matt Taylor of Prosser.

Sunnyside's Jesus Alquicira and Jacob Kresse closed out the match by defeating John Surmeyer and Colton Zocher 6-0, 6-3.

The Grizzly boys improved to 9-1 in league and 11-1 overall. With a win at Hanford tomorrow, the boys can pull into a tie for first place.

"To beat them we're going to have to win No. 1 and 2 doubles," Whittle said of the key to overtaking Hanford, which beat Sunnyside 4-1 earlier this season.
