Michels 12th overall at Pendleton invite

PENDLETON, ORE. - Senior Andrew Michels continues to sharpen his game with the postseason just around the corner.

The Grandview High School golfer turned in a 12th place overall finish at last Friday's Pendleton Invitational. The invite drew 18 prep squads, many of them from larger schools.

Michels started his round by knocking down birdies on three of his five opening holes.

"He got off to a great start," said Sunnyside Coach Scott Parrish.

The GHS senior cruised the front nine with a sparkling 33. He had a couple of hiccups after the turn, absorbing a 42. Still, the 3-over-par 75 he carded was the 12th low round on the day.

One of the golfers from the host Pendleton team won medalist honors with a 6-under-par 66.

Team-wise, Pendleton also came out on top with an aggregate score of 296.

For Grandview, its 356 score earned the Greyhound linksters a 12th place finish from the 18-school field.

Parrish was pretty satisfied with that, especially considering that Grandview's No. 2 golfer this season, Kaelen Nelson, was unable to make the trip to Pendleton.

With Nelson out of the line-up, Spencer Lewis stepped up to claim the second low round for Grandview. He shot a 92. Right on his heels was teammate T.J. Bolt with a 93.

Rounding out the Greyhound team scoring was a 96, carded by Aaron Riggs.

The Grandview boys team has a non-league match against visiting Ephrata this coming Thursday, and will then close out conference play with a CWAC South competition at home against league foes Othello, East Valley, Naches and Toppenish next Tuesday, May 9. The CWAC District tournament is slated for Saturday, May 13, at Warden. The top golfers from District will advance on to the State tournament.
