The lone blemish on Sunnyside Christian's 'B' league record was put there last Friday by the Mabton High School girls fastpitch softball team.
Sparked by a two-hitter spun by Alida Mendoza, Mabton defeated the Lady Knights by a 2-1 score in the first game of the twin bill. Sunnyside Christian bounced back for a 5-1 win in the nightcap.
The league ending doubleheader for both clubs left the Lady Knights with a conference best 11-1 mark, 15-4 overall. Mabton finished league play with a second best record of 7-5, 10-10 overall.
Both teams advance to this coming Saturday's District tournament in Zillah. Sunnyside Christian will open the double-elimination postseason tourney against Lyle, while Mabton will take on LaSalle. The top two finishing teams at District will move on to Regionals, set for the following Saturday, May 20.
In edging Sunnyside Christian 2-1 in last Friday's opener, Mabton turned in a solid defensive effort behind Mendoza. She allowed just two hits while fanning two Lady Knight batters.
"We had some hard hits, but they were right at the Mabton fielders," said SCHS Coach Sandy Harris. "But Mabton played some good defense...you have to give them credit."
The Lady Knights took the early lead in the game, at 1-0, in the bottom of the second without the benefit of a single base hit. Emma Newhouse generated the run by herself, by drawing a walk, moving to second on a passed ball and taking third on yet another passed ball. Mabton catcher Jessica Orosco scrambled and tried throwing Newhouse out at third, but the ball sailed into left field, allowing Newhouse to dance home with the run.
The Lady Vikes tied the game at 1-1 in the top half of the fourth. Mendoza singled her way aboard, stole second and raced home on a single by Anna Jimenez. Mabton scored the game winner in the next frame, thanks to a an RBI single off the bat of Celida Diaz.
The two hits Sunnyside Christian managed off Mendoza in the first contest were collected by the Van Wingerden sisters-Tori's single in the fifth and Melanie's single in the seventh.
In the losing effort, Sunnyside Christian pitcher Emily Hernandez scattered four hits while striking out nine and walking two. Hernandez also yielded four hits in the nightcap and recorded another nine strikeouts, but picked up the second game win thanks to the five runs her club scored.
The Lady Knights scored all the runs they would need the second game in their first at-bat. After Jacqui Roberts (walk) and Hernandez (hit by pitch) got on base, Courtney Rice slapped an RBI single and Newhouse followed with a two-run double to center.
In the losing effort in game two, Mendoza was 2-for-3 at the plate and Orosco cracked a fourth inning double.
