Lady Grizzlies lose two close ones to Prosser

PROSSER - The Sunnyside High School fastpitch team lost two close games to Prosser Tuesday, 12-11 and 13-12.

Both games were lost in the late innings. Sam Garcia was on the mound for the Lady Grizzlies and she lasted five innings before Amanda Guillen came in to relieve her.

In the first game Sunnyside had an 11-10 lead going in to the bottom of seventh inning.

"Two errors on one play allowed a player to get to second base," Sunnyside Coach Ralph Mendoza said. "Instead of having two outs we only had one."

The next batter singled and made it to base and then both players were brought home when the next batter came up. That ended the first game.

Victoria Ramos went 3-for-4 in the first game with two runs. Lacey Yanez was 2-for-4 and Kassi Guillen was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

The second game was just like the first one, lots of scoring but no defense.

"We were hitting the ball well but we couldn't stop them from scoring runs," Mendoza said. "The errors killed us."

Prosser broke open a 12-12 tie in the fifth inning with one run to make it 13-12. Neither team could do much more in the sixth and seventh innings.

Yanez was 2-for-4 in the second game.

The losses dropped the Lady Knights to 2-10 in league play and 5-14 overall.

"The loss gave us the #6 seed and we will have to play Selah now (at District)," Mendoza explained.

The Grizzlies will travel to Richland High School to take on Selah this Saturday, May 13, at 10 a.m.

"It was a tough way to end the season," Mendoza said. "We will be doing a lot of fielding work this week. We're moving some people around and are trying some new things. We always play Selah tough so if we minimize our errors and play good, fundamental ball, we should be in it."
