Mineral resource task force meeting set for Tuesday

ZILLAH – The Yakima County Mineral Resource Task Force will host an open house Tuesday, May 16, to present its final recommendations on preserving mineral resource lands in the county, and to take comments on those recommendations.

Next Tuesday’s meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the Zillah Civic Center.

The six-member task force has spent the last year identifying specific areas for possible future mineral resource extraction. In addition, the task force has proposed specific mineral resource-related changes to the county’s comprehensive plan and zoning ordinance.

“The final recommendations identify approximately 12,000 acres throughout Yakima County as candidates for potential mineral resource extraction,” said Tommy Carroll, Yakima County project planner. Carroll said maps will be available at Tuesday’s meeting, which outline the potential sites.
