RICHLAND - Sophomores Dacia Drollinger and Emily Shuttleworth represented Sunnyside at yesterday's Mid-Valley League District girls golf tournament, staged at Richland's Horn Rapids Golf Course.
Because Sunnyside can't field a full four-girl squad, the Lady Grizzlies had an incomplete score in the team standings. West Valley won the District team title, behind medalist Liz Tikriti's 20-over-par 92, with an aggregate 396. Selah was just five strokes back, with a 401, to claim runner-up honors.
Of the 26 girls competing at District yesterday, Drollinger finished in 20th place. She toured the par-36 front nine with a 56, notching a 59 after the turn.
"Dacia continues to drive the ball well, long and straight," said Sunnyside Coach Gary Rohde. "But she still needs to work on her short game, especially her chipping."
Rohde said Drollinger has caught the eye of several of the Mid-Valley League coaches, as yesterday she was named an all-league honorable mention selection.
Shuttleworth, in carding a 131 Wednesday afternoon, posted her lowest 18-hole score ever. She opened with a 62 on the front side, ballooning a bit to a 69 on the final nine holes of play.
Rohde said the highlight of Shuttleworth's round came on the par-4 sixth hole. "She got on in two and made the putt for the birdie," he said.
The SHS Lady Grizzly linksters are scheduled to compete against Grandview today (Thursday) at Black Rock Creek Golf Course. The non-league match will serve as a tune-up for next Monday's Regional tournament competition, to be held at Meadow Wood Golf Course in Spokane. The top dozen or so golfers at Regionals will qualify for the State tourney, also to be staged at Meadow Wood.
